Well, I have a sword build for a derv, but it just doesn't compare to the scythe. First, take into account that the sword build will be underpowered in comparison to a warrior. Second, it will have to be complimented with a shield, thus making te Derv less potent in all aspects. Third, and most importantly, the melee attacks of Dervish are all almost linked to Scythe Mastery.
Yet, if after all that, you still want to use a sword on your derv, then I'll give some tips.
1) Get malinon's Shield. You're always enchanted, so that's a no brainer.
2) Go with a zealous sword for energy management, an ebon blade for Ebon Dust Aura builds, and a furious for adrenaline.
3) Always remember, the derv with the scythe has the advantage.

No matter what you do, you can't beat a thumper bunny so just play one instead.

you mean hammer R/W? R/A and R/P thumpers are comparable, stop thinking metas are the best. Avatar of Balthazar with hammer is cool. with sword, i'd use either ebon dust aura+armor of sanctity, or Dwayna avatar+ripostes =]

I know a (once) great farming build D/W that used a sword. It was nerfed when AoM was, so it doesn't do much good. I'd give you the build, but i'm too lazy to.

I have an idea! Make a warrior! A level 15 warrior can generally perform as well as a level 20 dervish with a sword!

I have a nice Axe build for RA/TA, don't know if swords would work as well because they don't have an unconditional deep wound.
Mysticism 12+3+1
Axe Mastery 12
Superior Mysticism, Superior Vigor, one Attunement and 2 Vitae, full Blessed Insignia
Zealous 15^enchant Axe of Fortitude (for attacking), Sundering 20^hexed of Fortitude (when hexed with anti-melee crap), Sundering 15^enchant Axe of Enchanting (for casting enchantments). I use a +30hp/-2enchant shield because I don't like losing 30hp when I get shattered.
Rush
Dismember
Mystic Sweep
Eremite's Attack
Protector's Strike
Resurrection Signet
Heart of Fury
Avatar of Lyssa {e}
Damage and pressure is insane, way better than a warrior can dream of, and you don't rely on adrenaline so much either. On a long cast, Dismember -> Mystic -> Eremite's -> Protector's will do around 300-360 damage, not counting Deep Wound, in <2 seconds. Rit spirit spammers get pwned instantly, and people using Res sigs will find themselves in need of one.
It's arguable whether a scythe is better but I like axes for the unconditional deep wound, and the faster attack speed with a Zealous Axe allows for constant spamming of attack skills.
For a sword I suppose you could take Barbarous, Gash, and Sun&Moon Slash, and use a Vamp Sword for more damage. Still nowhere near as good as unconditional deep wound, though.

I just run around with one because I need the +20 enchant. Looks cool enough, but I prefer the scythe.
I really can't think of a dervish build that would work well with a sword. Sorry.

by the way, marverick, yours is just a chain of timed attack skills with avatar of lyssa, its been done before with a scythe, and it turns out much better that way, you lose dismember and put in wild blow for a crit every 8 seconds
